the following site to improve your Internet safety: FROM THE ADMINISTRATION Please be reminded that student drivers need to purchase a parking permit for $25 from the main office. Only 11th and 12th grade students are eligible to apply. Cars that do not have a parking permit affixed to the rear window, body, or bumper will be warned/booted/ticketed for the first offense. Repeat offenders risk having their cars towed. The Rock Church also sells permits for $60 at Coastal Christian Academy. Students who park at the Rock Church without a permit will be towed without warning. The cost to retrieve your vehicle is approximately $110. Please see Mr. Manugo if you have any questions. CLUB, TEAMS, & GENERAL NEWS AP money collection continues. Late registration is March 12th - March 14th with payment at $87.00 per exam. The exams will take place between May 5 - May 16 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center at the oceanfront. Gifted News SPARKS is a 1/2 credit gifted seminar for 11th and 12th grade students that is offered during the fall semester. The title for next year is American Dreaming. The basic idea is the "real story of the 60's depicts the largest generation in American history coming of age in an unprecedented period of economic growth, and questioning the very basis of our government, culture and economy. It is the story of young Americans who decided they wanted something more"(Hill). We will focus on pop culture, rock and roll, activism and optimism. The Office of Gifted Education is offering a final parent seminar in the Salem MIddle School Library from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on March 19th. The topic is What is intelligence Anyway? The Virginia Space Grant Consortium in partnership with NASA Langley announces the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Program. The program is open to any high school junior with an interest in science. Students will complete an exploration themed online course and attend a 6 day residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley in Hampton from July 27 - August 1 2008. Lodging, meals and transportation costs are covered while at the academy. See www.vasts.spacegrant.org for requirements and information. The application deadline is March 14, 2008. GUIDANCE Schedule Changes for the 2008-2009 School Year Parents of students who wish to make course selection changes for the 2008-2009 school year must make the requested changes on the course verification sheet which will be issued to students on February 28th. Parents/students have until March 14th to submit the requests. Requests will not be accepted after the March 14th date. Changes will not be honored without a parent signature. Virginia University of Lynchuburg will be conducting an informational session on Monday, March 17, 2008. A college representative will have a set-up outside the cafeteria beginning at 10:45 a.m. All interested students are encouraged to stop by. Tidewater Community College will be conducting an informational session on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. This session will begin at 12:15 in the Guidance Conference Room. Interested students should see Ms. Wiggins in Guidance to sign up. The SAT prep course will be available as an elective next year. Contact your guidance counselor if you have a question about this class. Juniors: if you are interested in attending the United States Naval Academy, why not get a true feel for what Academy life is like? There are three 6 day Summer Seminars during June when you can experience a taste of Academy life. If you are interested in attending the Academy or one of these sessions, please see Mr. Leonard in guidance for more information and sign up procedures. SCA NEWS 2008-09 Election Information Kempsville High School student elections for Senior, Junior, Sophomore Class and SCA Office are on the horizon. If you have a child interested in running for office, encourage him/her to pick up an intent to run card and elections application in the Main Office, Student Activities Office, or Room 103. Cards are due back on March 10th KUDOS Congratulations to Kelly Ranz who received All-State Honors for her 4th place finish in the pole vault at the AAA State Indoor Track and Field Championships held at George Mason University on Saturday, March 1st. Dominique Smith placed 8th in the 55 Meter High Hurdles to also earn All-State Honors. Congratulations to Stephen Patrick and Shawn Shultz for participating on an Advanced Internet Web Professional program team at the ATC. They developed the first VBCPS Workplace Readiness Skills website in conjunction with the Office of Technical and Career Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Through their hard work, the website will “inform parents, business leaders, and educators” about the skills VBCPS teaches and will better prepare our students for their future careers in the technology field. ATHLETICS The varsity baseball team will be conducting a marathon baseball game on Saturday March 8th. The proceeds of this fundraiser will go to the St. Clare Jones recovery fund. Coach Jones is the Kellam baseball coach who was in a car accident and suffered extensive back injuries. Players will be seeking pledges per inning of play in what we hope will be an exciting 100 inning baseball game. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a $1,500 that will be awarded for not less than one or more than 4 years. It is a program that recognizes student excellence and achievement and recognizes exceptionally able students.
